We went to see the Balloon Championship today and the weather couldn’t have been better…for the evening show, that is! We were disappointed in the morning’s cancellation; even more so of the fact that Starbucks wasn’t open at 6:30am! They managed to jump the gun on the cancelation as the weather turned out to be fabulous all day. Oh well – I had a very productive day until it was time to go back for the evening’s show. This is an annual show in Baton Rouge that we have only managed to see once before about 10 years ago! The first thing up was a demonstration from the Black Daggers who are the official USA Army Special Operations Command Parachute Team. They jumped out of a helicopter and landed in the field doing twists and turns and flying the American flag. It was a wonderful start. Then the Hair & the Hounds chase game began for the hot air balloons with the Advocate’s balloon taking off first (the hair) followed by 30 or so others (the hounds). The first to find and land with the lead balloon won a prize of some sort. It was fun to see just how fast the teams could get their balloon inflated and into the air, and a truly majestic site to see the sky filled with all of them. My favorite part came after that as soon as the sun set.
tickle time...Dad's can always find time to play
It’s the “glow” where the balloons light up looking like huge colorful ornaments in the field. They take turns between full burns, where they all light up at once, and twinkle burns, where they twinkle like Christmas lights as the name implies. The announcer said it takes something like 32,000 BTU’s to heat the balloon enough to rise or 20 million BTU’s per hour. WOW. Then we raced home skipping the fireworks in hopes of catching the rest of the Olympic opening ceremonies.

I'm sorry we missed it. Maybe next year.
