Mom's turn: Getting ready for Gustav

Getting ready for Gustav has been exhausting. People are rushing like mad in the event that the storm will hit us. I’m personally not too concerned since we are inland and there is no threat of a surge. However, other people’s preparations are making general life a bit hairy! Normal grocery shopping became impossible as the shelves were empty, the lines ridiculous, and the attitudes even worse! Everyone is purchasing the required items for their hurricane kit; if it comes to that I will be in trouble! Getting gas is already hard because people are in a mild panic due to the post traumatic stress of Hurricane Katrina. I’ll be glad when the scare is over and we can get back to normal. However, after Hurricane Fay this year I think we definitely learned some lessons from a fellow in Florida on what not to do in a storm!

Daring Hair

I have always loved to do crazy things with my hair! I have done extreme cuts, crazy colors, and fun styles! My mom is really easy going when it comes to hair. I really don’t think she cares what I do to my hair. If I ever get worried about doing something wild she tells me, “it is hair and it will grow out.”

I have done colorful streaks many times, but the last time I dyed my hair I decided to be a little bolder and bleach the whole underside then dye it pink. Well I have also been growing my hair out to donate to Locks of Love, and unfortunately I found out they don’t take bleached hair! :-( So...I decided to do a crazy hair cut! I looked around on the internet and found some cute ones like this.

Mom's turn: A New Level

My HH has reached even a higher level of Monk-ism than I have!!! He ironed our sheets before he made the bed :-/ Hmmm, am I really supposed to SLEEP on them?

Samson & I rested with our feet up while we laughed at Daddy for ironing the sheets

Okay - I must admit...after sleeping on them he may be in trouble now! They really were much more comfortable. I might be spoiled now!

Mom's turn: Friends of the family

Knowing just how much my friend adores geckos, I couldn’t help but post this just for her! I have a new house guest, er, make that house gecko in the laundry room. He came to visit to get out of the heat. Now when she comes to visit she won’t feel homesick and miss the one that got in her house! They really are cute little things – I like how their skin is see-through. Someone told me they are photosensitive; they look like they may be, although I have not personally verified that bit of info. This guy was little, maybe 2 inches in length. He was too fast to catch, so I can’t be sure! He ran and hid behind the dryer…and hopefully he will eat that big bug when he comes back out!! This is not an insectarium, you know!

Mom's turn: Prissy Poems

I sent my daughter to camp in the Smoky Mountains with the hope that she would come back enlightened somehow…

Well – here it is!!!! While at camp they had a nightly routine to discuss bodily functions and such in a polite manner to keep a check on the kids and make sure they weren’t getting sick, I suppose?!?!?!?! They had these rhymes to help:

One – just got done; it’s all fun; I ain’t got none
1.5 – I feel alive
1.8 – I’m great
Two – I kinda have to pooh
Three – I may need to do more than just pee; I might need to find a tree
Four – it’s comin’ out the door

SOOOO – while my DD was on her solitary hike (another required element in the camp that puts their new found knowledge to the test) she came up with some more:

He hit 6.8 it was obviously too late.
He was having issues; he needed a tissue.
I said, “Oh great! I don’t think I can wait.”
He said, “Oh grief! I need new briefs.”

Followed by her “study in science”:

It starts with a S and ends with a T.
It comes out of you, and it comes out of me.
I know what you’re thinking but don’t call it that.
Be scientific and call it
scat!

She knows how to make a mother proud!

FUN FUN FUN!!!!!

About a year and a half ago I met a really cool friend on a cruise. Her name is Kelley.
Last summer I went and stayed a week at her house; this summer she came down to my house for a week! It was a blast!! Smoores YUM!

We did a lot of stuff! We went to Blue Bayou twice one of the times we stood in line for a hour just to see a concert! Yuck! We went to New Orleans. In New Orleans Kelley got to buy 2 more masks to add to her collection I started for her last year! And of course we went shopping!
My new mask
While we were in New Orleans we shopped till we dropped and saw a lot of crazy things including a cross-dresser and some signs, clubs, and pictures that you would only see in places like Good old New Orleans! Kelley definitely got to see the best of it! Sadly we did not get to go to the zoo though. Maybe we can do that next time she comes down! :-D
Kicking it up on Bourbon St.

The concert we went and saw was a four in one concert. It included the bands: The Main, Good Charlotte, Metro Station, and Boys Like Girls. My favorite was Boys Like Girls, although their lead singer was sick. :-( Kelley’s favorite band was Metro Station! She even bought some purple skinny jeans similar to the ones that the band members wear!
Concert
While Kelley was down here I had a summer party! She got to meet all my friends! We all dyed our hair different colors, too!

Mom's turn: Phantom footsteps

The older I get the more I reminisce about what my mother would have been like at my age – I have outlived her age at her death by 4 years & 2 weeks now. Never seeing your mother grow old leaves the “wonder” factor wide open: I wonder if I look more or less like her the older I get,
do I see her in my smile?
I wonder if she would have “aged gracefully”, I wonder what health problems would have been genetic, I wonder if we would have gotten along as great as I do with my own daughter, I wonder if my personality is like hers as an adult, more than ever I wonder if she would have ever overcome her demons here on Earth. I have a great role model who jumped right in when she was needed and has guided me through most of life – my aunt! Since she was my mother’s sister, I have a vague idea about some of the looks, but they had totally opposite personalities. SO – back to wondering…I wonder what I would have been like if Mom finished raising me,
would I have such a colorful personality?
I wonder what my life would have turned out to be like and where I would be living now. I have very few memories of her as well, so I wonder what her voice sounded like, I wonder what her hair smelled like, I wonder how tall she would be standing next to me when we hugged.
would she have stood by me & my choices today?
I remember patchouli and silk and Janice Joplin and a hippy commune…these are a few things I hold on to. My mother was tiny – so all of her things I had would never have fit me if they would have lasted…but my aunt held on to this one shirt that still, if I smell hard enough, smells like the essence that I remember in the color of her eyes. So now on my birthday wearing my mother’s shirt – perhaps I can feel just a touch closer to knowing a memory and following in her phantom footsteps.

Mom's turn: Using the "F" word

That’s the perfect way to describe my birthday! Family, Friends, Fur-babies, Fun, & Food!

It started with kisses & a smile...

and then Travis taking me shopping for “something for the house because you’ve made it so beautiful”…a real ahhhhh moment; he’s such a sweetie!! SOOO – I chose a cast-iron firepot and soprano wind chimes

for the back patio that is “a project in the works” in hopes of inspiring us to finish this fall when the weather cools off a bit. And I also found an elephant item that I have never seen before, chocolate elephant candy, so I definitely had to give that a try!! Then my DD gave me a “hand”…in a card that is. She’s so creative! The hand was holding a certificate “good for one necklace” made by her. WOW!! I’m excited…can’t wait to see what it turns out like.

I received tons of well-wishes through email, phone calls, and cards from all of my friends; Ginger even gave me a shout out on her blog – how sweet is that! I feel so loved. I was also surprised by Travis with friends for dinner and laughs as well…insert “fun and food” here :-D Definitely a FABULOUS birthday!

Mom's turn: The LADY is back

We were lucky enough to see our special plant bloom again this summer. We had three blooms – one for Teeny’s room and two for ours – to fill our night with sweet smelling dreams.

Mom's turn: Back in school...ME???

Okay – now they have scrapbook college believe it or not!! What I have gotten myself in elbow deep at MMU???
Welcoming the entire class...
our "sorority"...
They even have HOMEWORK! HUH…this is supposed to be fun. :-P All kidding aside – I’m taking several classes with a couple of great friends at a little store in Prairieville, LA. So far orientation and my first two classes, Bring it Back and Hip to be 1” Square, were great! Time was a bit of a crunch – but then that is my problem to begin with. I’m excited about the rest of the semester and hope to finally get to a point in scrapping that I feel “on top of it.”

My first class - Bring it Back: we worked with patterned sisscors and acrylic paints...hmmmm, now I remember why they are no longer fun!

SOOOOOOO...in my very first class I got an "F" for "does not follow directions." Kidding - there are really no grades. We were to bring pictures for an adult birthday...ooops, missed that part.

the cupcakes & candles are painted gold and then the icing is painted with pink polkadots...lovely trick she taught - use the end of your dry emboss stylis for perfect "dots." Several other items are painted in the layout as well - that was messy and took a long time to dry. Then you had to cut everything with your patterned scissors...my thumb went to sleep because of so much detail cut work!! AHHHH...not fun! I did enjoy the ribbon trick part, though. She showed us a way to "lace your mat."

The second class, "Hip to be 1" Square" was, you guessed it, all about the different ways to use a 1" square punch! We learned windows, photo tabs, photo corners, mosaic matting, 4" square, tiles, and frames...very useful!!! She also taught us how to make sure our punches were evenly spaced - awesome...no more ruler!

And the greatest part with every class is that she gives you ideas for all of your scraps. You end up with enough for 2-3 cards and 2 tags. FABULOUS! I never know what to do with all of those scraps!!!

Mom's turn: And the doctor said...

I decided to give myself a round of doctor’s visit for my birthday – how masochistic is that, right?!?!?!?! I figured if I did it then I might actually remember to do them annually like you’re supposed to…and what better way to stay healthy and have even MORE birthdays. SOOOO – I started out with the eye doctor figuring that would be the least painful.
waiting prooved to be the most painful part

When I called to make the appointment they informed me that my previous doctor had retired and moved to Colorado several years ago…oh. Well that was embarrassing – tells you just how long it’s been since I’ve had an exam.
torture device of choice

So I asked them to recommend someone else. Thankfully everything is fine – no glasses necessary! My eyes are great!! WAHOOO…that seems to be one thing that is holding up on me with age :-/

However there is nothing quite like trying to drive home with dialated pupils...hmmm, perhaps next time I ought to enlist my HH as my chauffeur :-D
