Mom's turn: Japantown bound!

Day 7 Today we went over the Golden Gate Bridge, planning a walk on it tomorrow, to visit Japantown. Both Teeny and Mao were excited to stop in this part of San Francisco. Unfortunately, we just missed the Cherry Blossom festival!
The history reads:
San Francisco’s Japantown, or Nihonmachi, established in the Western
Addition in 1906, is the oldest of the three remaining historic Japantowns in
the United States. The story of what happened here is a significant and
integral part of our country’s mosaic. Despite many obstacles, San
Francisco’s Japantown has maintained its dignity and identity as a distinctly
American place.

Its existence today is a testimony to the
perseverance of those who created and maintained its heritage through major
demographic, social and physical changes during the course of its
history.

The Japanese American History Walk is a journey through
many episodes of Japantown’s story. The Walk explores the genesis,
development, and dynamic changes that continue to shape Japantown.

Japantown encompassed several blocks of authentic Japanese food and items for sale. Teeny and I tried a mango tapioca drink,

also known as bubble tea,

I'm eating WHAT???

and Mao was able to order lunch for them.

Travis & Teeny acting goofy!

We spent several hours there and drove over towards the bay parking next to Lombard St. That was a wild site and NO, we did not attempt to drive down it. Instead, we headed to the Fisherman’s Wharf area, a blatant tourist trap, but easy to find on the bay, to meet my cousin, Claire.

Claire & Elen

FINALLY…it only took 27 years, but I caught up with her!! We ate at Scoma’s on a friend’s recommendation, and it was superb! Both the food and the reunion were fabulous and I certainly hope it doesn’t take another 27 years before I see her again! Then it was back up the hills to the car and to the hotel to rest for another exciting day tomorrow.

like mother like daughter :-D

Hi Elen,
Thank you so much for getting in touch with me on your way through the Bay Area. You look so beautiful and you have such a wonderful family. It was great to meet Travis as well. Please thank him again for lunch and wish him the best of luck on his marathon. Please stay in touch and let's make sure we see each other again before another 25 years have passed :)

Love,
Claire
