Day 4 As we were leaving Arizona and saying goodbye to all of the sugar cacti, we saw a creepily realistic giant baby billboard in a crop field! HUH? We also saw a coyote cross the road…so that brought up the whole discussion with Mao again. I got the idea for Teeny to look up a Wiley Coyote cartoon on You Tube and let her watch. They giggled and watched; then I came to the conclusion that Mao is the road runner and I am the coyote when it comes to taking her picture! She is the most camera shy person I have ever met…and she’s FAST at ducking out of the way!! I’m always trying to trick her, like Wiley, into turning towards the camera so I can catch her :-D After passing another inspection station and then over the Colorado River we made it to California!
We saw a rather large lava flow, but we didn’t stop because it was so hot and we were ready to get to the hotel! We also saw several more windmills; although they were all still in spite of the gusts blowing across the plains. They looked just as statuesque as all of the yucca trees that were along the roadside as well. Then we passed the Marine training facility, 29 Palms, but it was too far off the road to see anything. We also drove by the exit for the historic Route 66…where we opted not to get our kicks this time. Instead, we were trying to make good time getting to Fresno for the night for less driving tomorrow. One more interesting thing we saw was a moth-ball facility in the Mojave Desert. Travis is full of interesting tid-bits of knowledge. This is a place to store airplanes that are out of use in a dry climate to keep the rust to a minimum. He heard a report the other day about how the numbers of planes being “moth-balled” have risen due to the poor economy.
Finally we found out that “Real milk comes from happy cows”…however, I’m not sure why they are happy when they have to spend their lives looking at the greener grass on the other side of the fence.
